Movie Name: Anna Karenina
“Tries too hard to gain the attention with its lavish, detailed stage-like visuals. Anna Karenina is vast, beautiful and brave even if it fails to fully realize its potential.”

This came into my watchlist when I saw #JoeWright’ first ever movie, #Atonement since then I was amazed by his long and beautiful cinematography. His movies use photography as one of the elements of storytelling, they play a huge part. #AnnaKarenina may be his boldest, wildest and lavished movie ever, the guy went all board. There is a good sense of lavish costumes and sets, and a sense of the emptiness and superficiality of Russian aristocracy. However, for all its intrigues, just doesn't quite hit the spot. Not entirely engaging and seems to drag in segments. Some of the imagery was just too clever for its own good, ending up feeling pretentious. It short and easy word its trying to hard. Yet the beauty is present. , I don't quite understand the frequent use of the big room that looks like a stage for a play. Anna Karenina's son is in bed in that room, Karenin and his children play in that room with grass inside it, and Anna Karenina is pushed on a sleigh like a chair on snow as entertainment. That room is very multi-functional, or I am missing something. I'm sure many found it incredibly distracting, but I really liked it. The technical aspects of the film are fantastic, with Marianelli giving us another really beautiful film score and McGarvey's cinematography is absolutely award-worthy. I also really, really liked the first half, and although it was obvious by the pace and the dramatic story that it was based on a novel, it was working well for me. But the last two acts just... bored me. That was the biggest problem. I was never bored enough to stop paying attention, and the story as a whole probably makes for a rich literature experience. But I was just watching, more and more unaffected by everything as it went on. #KeiraKnightley handles, shines and carries the film with not just her sensual beauty but also her talent. -CONTINTUED IN COMMENTS
