Just found this @TheSunDial article on our APA-LA Student Symposium at @CSUN_edu on Feb 24, 2018. Shout out to @UPSNCSUN for leading this event 🙌 and The Sun Dial for covering it 📰
I was honored to serve as opening speaker on the Housing Panel. This was the inaugural public talk in my still-going speaking tour, “A Matter of Necessity: Understanding Informal Housing Through Storytelling.” As the article notes, I’m telling the saga of the Medina Family in @FlorenceFirestone, who got an unpleasant lesson on Planning & Zoning when I received a report about their informal backyard accessory dwelling unit (ADU) in 2016.
The Medina saga is one of struggle and resilience—a process that defines daily life in #SouthCentral#LosAngeles. Planners need to know the Medina Family saga. I can tell the Medina story because I earned their trust, at their doorstep, through my #EmbeddedPlanning praxis.
More Medina Family #ADU talks *and* writings are in the works. Stay tuned.
