Sleep and why it is so important for health and body composition 😴 It cannot be stressed highly enough how important sleep is for body composition changes and general good health. Most of the population would probably admit that they don't get enough sleep. 😞 It's very much an individual figure but most people tend to need between 7-9 hours. Some can function very well on just 6, but anything lower than that over a prolonged period can become detrimental. The odd night is fine. We all have those for sure. # Why is sleep so important? # When we sleep we recover from the previous day's work and activity. This is where we mentally and physically refresh ourselves. Have you ever got less sleep than you need and felt like a zombie the next day both mentally and physically? I know I have and I don't like it. It affects me in a massive way. I don't feel as sociable, my focus and clarity is poor and my motivation to train starts to wane. # When we sleep we typically go through 5 stages, 1-4 and then REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. # Stage 1️⃣ is light sleep. You may drift in and out of consciousness. Muscle activity begins to slow down and eye movement is slow Stage 2️⃣ brain movement significantly slows and eye activity ceases. The body is in preparatory mode for deep sleep with the temperature decreasing and heart rate slowing. Stage 3️⃣ is deep sleep. You may experience sleep talking or walking during this period. Deep sleep continue in stage 4️⃣ Rapid eye movement is characterised by intense brain wave action. The eyes stay closed but move fast. Brain activity mimics that as if you were awake.
