CONTRIBUTOR WEDNESDAY ▪️ SEAN CONBOY is the Executive Editor of The Players' Tribune. TPT is a media company founded by Derek Jeter providing athletes with a platform to connect directly with their fans, in their own words.
@_alyonka : HI! I was thinking about how I wanted to start this conversation and I think I'll begin with what I remember about our first email exchange.
I believe it was the early days of The Player’s Tribune (apostrophe before or after the S?? Grammar insecurities) and you had reached out to do an interview with my Father. Now, my Father does NOT do interviews - and i’m sure you’ve learned in your process of working at TPT, that majority of athletes are very weary of the media. I liked you. I liked what you were doing and I liked your voice and so I brought the idea to him. I entrusted you with him. I was pleasantly surprised after the interview wrapped that my Father’s reaction was different than it usually is when speaking with the “media”. So, thank you?! hah . But also, maybe let us know your experience of this, what makes YOU different, and why you chose to work with TPT in the first place (long intro I know).
@seanpatrickconboy: Yes, first of all, thanks very much for allowing your dad to do the process of creating a story with us. It’s actually a perfect introduction to what we do, because if I had to boil down what TPT is all about, and why I joined the “company” in the first place (and by “company” I mean 4 people in a WeWork office in New York who didn’t even have a website yet), I would say that it’s about empowering athletes like your father to be comfortable to tell the story of their lives in their own words.
